Privacy Policy

Center for Food Safety (CFS) is committed to maintaining the confidence and trust of our donors and those who visit www.centerforfoodsafety.org and our other websites. CFS is the sole owner of the information collected on our websites, and will not sell, trade, share, or rent this information to third parties.

Our Commitment to Our Donors

We will not sell, rent, share or trade our donors' names or personal information with any other entity, nor send mailings to our donors on behalf of other organizations, with the exception of our sister organization Center for Food Safety Action Fund.

This policy applies to all information received by Center for Food Safety, both online and offline, on any Platform ("Platform", includes the CFS website and mobile applications), as well as any electronic, written, or oral communications.

To the extent any donations are processed through a third-party service provider, our donors’ information will only be used for purposes necessary to process the donation.

Financial Transactions

If you choose to make an online donation to CFS, you will have to provide your credit card billing information. The credit card information that you provide at the time of donation is used only to process your donation and will not be stored or used by us for any other purposes. We will store other information about the details of your transaction for our records.

How do I know my credit card information is secure?

CFS works with Salsa Labs, Inc. and ActBlue to process our donations. Both Salsa Labs, Inc. and Act Blue use secure server software (SSL) that is the industry standard for secure commerce transactions. It encrypts all of your personal information, including credit card number, name and address, so that it cannot be read as the information travels over the Internet. Does CFS rent, share, sell or trade my email or mailing address?

CFS will not give, trade, rent, sell, or share donor or member email or mailing addresses or information about your online activities with other organizations other than our sister organization, Center for Food Safety Action Fund, except as specifically required to carry out the given action you requested. For example, if you send a message through our systems to your U.S. Senators, your message will be sent to them from your email address.

Information that CFS Collects

CFS collects information to help us better meet your needs and to improve our programs. Our reasons for collecting personal information include:

- Internal record keeping
- To carry out activities where personal information is required, such as advocacy actions
- To provide you with content that is relevant to you; for example, information about legislation in your state or local region

We only collect personal information from our donors and visitors when it is supplied to us voluntarily. Certain activities on our website (described in further detail below) may require you to provide information such as your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, or may ask you to submit written comments. If you do not wish to share the required information with CFS, do not participate in these activities.

The following are examples of how we may use your personal information when you engage in common activities on our website:

1. When you take an advocacy action such as sending a message to your elected representatives, government officials or other targets of CFS advocacy, we will keep a record of the information you submit, and will send your message to these recipients, along with the contact information you provide, such as your name, address, and email address. CFS is not responsible for what these recipients may do with your information. This information is not shared with or sold to, other organizations for commercial purposes. However, your statement to decision makers, along with personal information you voluntarily provide, will be forwarded by e-mail to those addresses listed.

Please note: Comments submitted to government agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), are considered to be public information. Personal contact information you provide will be placed in a public docket and may also be placed on the agency’s website and made available through the Internet in accordance with the provisions of the Electronic Freedom of Information Act. All of the information supplied in the correspondence, including addresses, phone numbers, signatures, and other identifiers, will be placed in the docket. CFS does NOT include your email address when we submit your comments to agency dockets on your behalf.

Submissions to a docket are part of the administrative record that government agencies use to make a decision. All submissions are public and may be viewed in the Dockets Management Branch public reading room. If you have any questions about the FDA’s handling of public comments, please direct them to the Docket’s Management Branch by calling 301-827-6860. 2. When you sign up to join our main email list or provide us with your email address, we will have a record of your email address and any other information you choose to provide. We will send you emails about urgent food safety action alerts, fundraising campaigns, and other CFS activities. You can opt out of these emails at any time through the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of every email you receive from us. CFS does not share, rent, or sell our members' or donors' information to anyone other than our sister organization, Center for Food Safety Action Fund.

3. When you make an online donation to CFS, your information will be added to our donor list and database, and you may be contacted about other CFS activities, news, action alerts, and/or fundraising campaigns. CFS does not share, rent, or sell our donors' information to anyone other than Center for Food Safety Action Fund.

Does CFS use cookies?

Yes, we use cookies for a variety of purposes. Cookies help us provide you with a better website, for example, by letting us monitor which pages our visitors and donors find useful. Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting cookies also help us determine the general demographics of our website visitors. A cookie does not give us access to your computer or any personally identifiable information about you.

You should be aware that we use third-party vendors to provide services on this site and in our offline business operations. The information that you submit on this site may be provided to those vendors on a confidential basis so that those vendors can provide services (such as maintaining our database, sending e-mail messages to activists, sending emails or petition signatures on your behalf to advocacy targets, or processing credit card transactions) on our behalf.

CFS provides links to other websites, and is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of these websites. Visitors to these third party websites are encouraged to read the privacy statements of each website that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies solely to information collected by www.centerforfoodsafety.org.

How to unsubscribe from receiving emails

If for any reason you would like to stop receiving emails from us:

Click the “Unsubscribe” link that is included in every email.You can also unsubscribe here at anytime, or send us an email at office@centerforfoodsafety.org and ask us to unsubscribe you from our email list.

Note that your contact information and your donation and action history will remain in our databases, but we will not send you emails.

Can I change the information I have given to CFS?

You can update your account information by creating or logging into your profile manager account.

Security

We are committed to ensuring that your information is secure. In order to prevent unauthorized access or disclosure, we have put in place suitable physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction.

The security measures used on this site include, but are not limited to, industry-standard Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology on all pages where we collect financial information, security certificates, and firewalls to maintain the security of stored data. While we follow industry standards to protect the personal information submitted to us, no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. Therefore, while we use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Although this site has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse, and alteration of information, no email or website can be 100% secure.
