CFS Statement: California Governor Gavin Newsom Rejects Twin Tunnels Project
Sacramento, CA ? Yesterday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration officially rejected the controversial Delta twin tunnels proposal. The twin tunnels?also known as "California WaterFix"?would have caused enormous harm to taxpayers, fish, wildlife, and water systems throughout California.
Last year, Center for Food Safety (CFS) and allies sued the California Delta Stewardship Council for amending the state's Delta Plan to back construction of the tunnels. A second lawsuit challenged Metropolitan Water District of Southern California's approval of $11 billion in funding for the project.
Following is a statement from Brenna Norton, Development Manager at the Center for Food Safety:
"We thank Governor Newsom's administration for scrapping the massive twin tunnels project. CFS and allies?including a coalition of residents, taxpayers, and fishermen from Los Angeles to Northern California?have fought this project and the wealthiest agricultural interests and water districts in the state for many years, in the hopes that this day would come.
We are pleased to witness the Governor seek a new direction for water management in California. The tunnels are a 20th century approach to 21st century conditions, and we look forward to continue working on sustainable solutions for California's water challenges."
